Throughout his life, Jeremiah stood alone declaring God’s message faithfully and courageously. He was the intercessor for the people in Judah, the country he loved so deeply.
The darkness at the top of the painting indicates how Israel (northern kingdom) turned away from God. Then the majority of the painting shows how rebellion and sin began to spread over the southern kingdom of Judah.
On the left, Jeremiah is shouting out in anguish for all to hear the words of God. On the right are images of idols of the time. In the center is a person (representing the land of Judah) whose eye and ear are closed to Jeremiah but whose eye and ear are wide open to sin.
As the darkness spreads to the southern kingdom of Judah, their once soft heart for God begins to harden. The very bottom of the painting represents the heart they had when they worshipped God alone.
Jeremiah encourages us to be obedient to God, even if the world doesn’t agree or understand it. We must not let what people want to hear determine what we say!
